The Asthma Education Clinic is pleased to introduce a course for health care professionals who want to learn more about asthma.

This course is intended for health care professionals who want to know more about asthma, but who do not plan to seek official certification or become professional asthma educators. It provides the essential background information needed to enable an HCP to understand asthma and communicate effectively with
patients.

After rhinitis, asthma is the second most common chronic disease that afflicts Americans. The National Heart Lung Blood Institute (NHLBI) recommends the training of all health care professionals who deal with patients with asthma. This course enables health care professionals to develop a strong asthma knowledge base which can only enhance their provision of care to patients with asthma.

This course covers the following topics:

Bullet pathophysiology of asthma
Bullet asthma triggers
Bullet asthma medications
Bullet asthma exacerbations, and how to handle them
Bullet questions frequently asked by patients

Course learning outcomes

After completing this course, the health care professional will be able to:

Bullet recognize the signs and symptoms of asthma
Bullet assess the effect of asthma on the patient
Bullet explain the medications used in the treatment of asthma
Bullet list the steps in handling an asthma exacerbation

Classes

The course is conducted in four classes or "units":

Continuing Education (CE) credits

This course is worth 6 CE credits.

Course structure

This course consists of four teleclasess, conducted by phone, one class a week, with each class lasting 1 hour and 15 minutes.
