The Asthma Education Clinic is pleased to announce a new course for health care professionals who want to learn more about:

  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • communicating effectively with patients
  • teaching techniques for patients
  • helping patients take control of their lives

This course provides the essential background knowledge needed to enhance the level of care provided to patients with COPD.

  • Differential diagnosis
  • Assessment tools
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Treatment programs
  • Smoking cessation
  • Exacerbations, and how to handle them
  • Educating adults and the elderly

Course learning outcomes

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • recognize the signs and symptoms of COPD
  • assess the effect of COPD on the patient
  • explain the medications used in the treatment of COPD
  • list the steps in handling a COPD exacerbation
  • identify and list both OTC and prescribed medications used in smoking cessation
  • discuss the psychosocial issues relating to COPD

Classes

The course is conducted in eight classes or "units". Each class is taught by telephone, and lasts for two hours.

Course Materials

The following course materials are provided to each participant:

  • Textbook: Delivery Devices for Asthma and COPD Medication
  • Booklets:
    - Smoke Signals
    - Asthma and the Elderly
  • Binder for slide handouts, course notes, etc.
  • Course notes, handouts, slide handouts, etc. – all sent by email.

Course times

All teleclasses start at 8 pm Eastern (7 pm Central; 6 pm Mountain; 5 pm Pacific and 4 pm Alaska) Time. Classes are two hours in length.

Class size

To ensure individual attention and effective personal interaction, only 15 persons are accepted for each class.

Continuing Education Contact Hours

The Asthma Education Clinic Ltd. will award 28.8 CE contact hours to participants who attend the course and complete all assignments. The Asthma Education Clinic Ltd. (Provider 14165) is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

How to register

Call (780) 988-6014. You will need to provide:

  • registration information (name, address, etc.)
  • payment (credit card or an approved Purchase Order)

Registration fees

The course fee is $749. This covers tuition and all course materials. Shipping is an additional $40, for a total fee of $789. All prices are in US dollars. Registrations received one week prior to the course start date incur an additional courier fee of $93 to cover two-day shipping of materials.

Additional costs

Apart from course fees, the only other cost incurred is for long-distance charges to our teleconference centre located in the US Midwest.

Discount for multiple registrations

If 5 or more people from the same organization register for the course, a course discount of 10% is applied and shipping is charged at actual cost. The small print: all registrants must be registered at the same time, all course materials must be shipped to one address, and payment for all registrations must be made through one payment transaction.

Cancellations and Substitutions

Cancellations will be accepted up to two weeks prior to the course start date. An administration fee of $100 will be charged. If course materials have already been mailed, they will additionally be charged at their full price of $95, plus shipping costs.

Substitutions: If the original registrant cannot attend, another person from the same organization may attend instead. Substitutions may be made up to two weeks prior to the course start date for a change fee of $90.

Late-registration surcharge for two-day shipping

For persons who register a week before the course start date, course materials will be sent by mail will not reach you in time for the first class. To ensure that they do, we will send the materials by two-day express service for a shipping surcharge of $93.
