Over-the-counter (OTC) medications are heavily promoted in the media, to the point where a pill exists for every ill. Use of these products is widespread among all age groups, being no longer the domain of only the elderly or sick.
A number of these OTC medications interact adversely with prescribed asthma medications, since many contain NSAIDs, anti-histamines and decongestants.
This publication discusses the problem and provides tables listing the OTC products of concern to the health professional treating a patient with asthma. It also discusses commonly-used OTC products, their composition and the cautions that should accompany their use.
